With traveller8 Softbox (best flash diffuser rating: 8.49), Honl Photo extends its line of flash light modifiers. Honl Photo traveller8 enters the market with the highest quality and an original design. It's portable, easy to use, and it is built to last.
Like all Honl Photo accessories, traveller8 looks and feels very professional. The body of the diffuser is thick and very hard to rip or damage during normal use. Professional photographers will appreciate the quality they can depend on.
The front screen of Honl Photo traveller8 Softbox is round, and it is 8" in diameter. There are not many diffusers out there that offer you this shape. So, if catchlights is an important part of your photography, having a round softbox can be a useful option.
traveller8 is very easy to setup. All you need to do is to attach the front translucent screen and pull the softbox over your flash head with a Honl Photo Strap already attached. Unlike many other Honl Photo modifiers, this softbox includes a strap, so you don't have to purchase it separately. We have to note that there is certain wobbliness from left to right when the softbox is attached to a flash head, because there are just two pieces of Velcro holding the unit. We find, however, that the attachment is very secure, and the diffuser will not fall off even if knocked around.
The front screen not only diffuses the light but also holds the shape of the softbox. Detaching the screen makes traveller8 to collapse to an 11"x9" piece.
Honl Photo traveller8 Softbox is best suited for off-camera work, but it performs very well on-camera, too. When using it in you camera's hot shoe, you most likely will not be able to take advantage of the auto focus assist beam of your flash gun. Since the softbox is so big, it is going to block the emitter. Also, be careful if shooting with wide-angle lenses and traveller8 Softbox. Make sure the diffuser does not get into the frame.
The image below shows that Honl Photo traveller8 is almost as big as LumiQuest Softbox III, which is a 8"x9" rectangle.
The following image was taken with Honl Photo traveller8 Softbox placed to the camera's left and above. A silver reflector was positioned on the camera's left for fill.
The last example is a tabletop shot, traveller8 is above the subject and slightly to the left. Honl Photo Speed Grid is on the right side and slightly behind the subject.
In conclusion, Honl Photo is a well-known manufacturer of accessories for hot shoe flash units. The new traveller8 Softbox is a welcomed addition to the Honl Photo family of products. With great appearance, quality, and portability, traveller8 can be a good choice for on- and off-camera flash photography. The best applications are portraiture (up to medium range), macro and product photography, as well as applications that require round catchlights.
